The role of Women in Lysistrata

Women were property, In Lysistrata "Something beautiful to own, to gaze upon, to fulfill your sexual needs and desires and to bear and raise your children in the appropriate cultural aspect". Except for sex and the family element, women really didn't have any redeeming social values. To even consider putting a woman into any position where she would be required to think, or to make decisions outside of the home was laughable. This is the root of their humor. In the opening scenes of the play, Lysistrata says "I'm furious with women and womankind. Don't all of our husbands say we are not to be relied upon... Don't they think we are such clever villains?" The women don't like the fact that the only power women have had over men from the dawn of time is to withhold from sex.

yea I can agree. the women's role in society were very limited. the men felt as if the women couldn't do anything except for please them sexually. other than that, they pretty much see the women as nothing. I don't c y, but that's how they felt.

It does seem like the women were viewed more as objects than people. The women's role at this time was to please the man and basically play the stereotypical role as a housewife.

Yea... they are like the trophy in the case kinda... i mean show them to your friends, let them please you and have them to carry on your legacy and thats really wat they were in the play. then when Lysistrata stood up the men get mad, which i found basically mindless.... i mean they are people and not jus little toys.

i agree with you. even nowadays men look at women as property (not as actual property) but as sex slaves
